Founded by Sir George Fistonich in 1961 in Auckland, Villa Maria has grown into one of New Zealand’s most well-known and loved brands. The company has wineries in Marlborough on the South Island as well as in Auckland and Hawke’s Bay on the North Island. I was very impressed to meet Helen Morrison, senior Marlborough winemaker, as we judged together over the course of three days, and enjoyed casual to more formal dinners at the 2017 Marlborough Wine Show. She is a breath of fresh air in our male-dominated wine world, and is the only woman on the company’s winemaking team. Go get ’em, Helen!
